The Institute of Finland-Swedish
Traditional Music is the main institution dealing with research in
Finland-Swedish traditional song and music. The institute was founded in 1978.
The Swedish home pages contain
information about the Finland-Swedish folk music and the institute. For
information about publications and records, please see the Swedish pages. If
you have any questions regarding these matters, please contact us!
The tasks of the institute are to
document the folk music of the Finland-Swedish society, as well as to publish
books, articles and records regarding folk music. The institute takes interest
in historical folk music as well as in the use of traditional music in present
time.
The Institute of Finland-Swedish
Traditional Music spreads information about the Finland-Swedish folk music and
supports education in folk music through educational books, tutoring and
courses.
The institute runs a library, containing
literature regarding primarily folk music and folklore. The institute also runs an archive for
collected as well as donated material.
The institute serves the public,
authorities, organisations and researchers with information and material on
folk music.
The research of the institute aims at
obtaining knowledge concerning the Finland-Swedish folk music. The collection
of material primarily serves our own research projects.
A few examples of the projects are:
studies of the types of instruments used in different areas, documentation of
the folk musicians’ organisations, starting early in the 20th century and
investigations of the Finland-Swedish ballad-singing tradition.
Starting in 1980, the institute has
recorded material concerning folk music. The institute has also received
donations, such as the public radio’s recordings from the 1940s and 1950s.
The archive of the institute contains
material concerning folk music, such as sound recordings, movies, photographs, notebooks
containing song lyrics, sheet music, notes as well as articles.
The Institute of Finland-Swedish
Traditional Music gracefully accepts donations within its areas of interest.
Both old and new literature about folk
music and folklore is available in the hand library of the Institute of
Finland-Swedish Traditional Music.
In 1982, the institute received the book
collection of Mr. Otto Seire, consisting of 410
valuable books on the topic of folk songs.
The library receives Nordic as well as
international magazines within the field of folk music. The institute also aims
at keeping a collection of folk music records available.
No loans are permitted for home reading,
but the library and its study areas are open during office hours.
The staff serves the public and
researchers with material from the archive and the library. No loans of
collections are allowed, but they can be copied for research purposes due to a
fee.
The Institute of Finland-Swedish
Traditional Music supports organizations, departments and media that work with
folk music. The staff can advice how to put programs
together, obtain instruments and literature on folk music, produce records, do
different kinds of research and so on.
The institute arranges exhibitions about
Finland-Swedish folk music, its settings as well as different instruments.
